Defi – updates and developments

Table of Contents

The definition of Defi is, Decentralised Finance, is a sector within the overall cryptocurrency and blockchain industry focused on providing a decentralized version of mainstream financial opportunities. In the mainstream world, financial institutions offer customers access to opportunities such as cash storage and loans. However, these offerings are governed by centralized entities.

Essentially, It attempts to remove third parties and centralized institutions from financial transactions. It is comprised of cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology and software that allows people to transact financially with each other. This removes the need for an unbiased intermediate during financial transactions, significantly increasing the speed and cost effectiveness of transactions. Since third parties are no longer involves, charges banks and other financial institutions charge to promote peer to peer transactions can now be saved and reinvested into their business.

Now let’s get into updates and developments of Defi.

Defi 2.0

Recently Defi on Ethereum is transitioning to Layer 2 solutions, enhancing scalability and reducing transaction costs. New revenue strategies have emerged, leveraging these technological advancements to offer more efficient and user-friendly financial services. This will be called DeFi 2.0.

Now as to why this is important, Defi 2.0 builds upon the foundations of Defi 1.0, however it introduces enhancements that address previous limitations and expand the decentralized finance ecosystem.

A new feature coming would be embracing a cross-chain approach, allowing operation across various layers of networks. This enhances interoperability and user accessibility.

Key components of DeFi 2.0 include:

  • Improved Protocols: DeFi 2.0 introduces more efficient smart contracts and protocols that allow for faster transactions and lower fees.
  • Interoperability: A key feature of DeFi 2.0 is its ability to connect various blockchains, enhancing cross-chain capabilities and reducing fragmentation.
  • Enhanced Security: With advanced cryptographic techniques and auditing practices, DeFi 2.0 platforms focus on improving security to reduce vulnerabilities and mitigate risks.
  • Sustainability: DeFi 2.0 introduces mechanisms to make yield farming and liquidity provisioning more sustainable in the long run, overcoming issues with token inflation and impermanent loss.

These new improvements to the existing system is sure to enhance overall efficiency, streamline processes, and drive greater productivity across the network.

Recent developments in the DeFi landscape.

SolvBTC

Discussions relating to bitcoin backed derivatives have recently been brought up, particularly focusing on SolvBTC. SolvBTC allows users to deposit Bitcoin or wrapped Bitcoin to mint tokens that represent the value of the deposited BTC on a 1:1 basis. These tokens can then be moved across different chains and applications. However, this flexibility makes it difficult to accurately track the total value locked (TVL), leading to allegations of double-counting the issuance of SolvBTC tokens.

Critics, including Nubit co-founder Hans, have raised concerns about the potential for unbacked reserves and inflated TVL figures in platforms like Solv. In response, Solv’s co-founder, Ryan Chow, dismissed these claims as a coordinated smear campaign by competitors. Despite such defenses, the article emphasizes that platforms like Solv introduce additional layers of trust and centralization, which can pose risks to users. Ensuring transparency and genuine backing of reserves is crucial to maintain trust and mitigate these risks in the expanding market of bitcoin-backed derivatives.

Frankendancer

Solana validators have been slow to adopt Frankendancer, a new version of the Solana validator client developed by Jump Crypto, primarily due to concerns about its efficiency in capturing Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). MEV refers to the additional value that validators can extract by reordering, including, or excluding transactions within a block. Currently, many validators use the Jito-Solana client, which is optimized for MEV extraction, contributing to approximately 25% of their staking rewards. In contrast, Frankendancer lacks such optimizations, making it less appealing to validators focused on maximizing profits. Despite this, some validators, like Phase Labs, have adopted Frankendancer, prioritizing contributions to the Solana ecosystem over higher annual percentage yields (APY)

Sonieum

Sony’s newly launched Layer 2 blockchain, Soneium, has faced criticism for censoring certain tokens, notably the AIBO memecoin, which was blocked by Soneium’s sequencer due to intellectual property (IP) concerns. Soneium’s documentation outlines a tiered restriction system designed to protect IP rights. This system flags potential IP violations and can enforce blocks at the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) level if issues aren’t resolved in time. Consequently, contract addresses on this list may face restricted activities, such as limited visibility on block explorers and exclusion from wallets.

Despite these measures, users managed to bypass the censorship by utilizing a forced transaction inclusion mechanism on the Ethereum Layer 1 (L1). This “escape hatch” allows any externally owned account (EOA) wallet to create an L2 transaction and submit it to Ethereum L1 without going through the L2’s centralized sequencer. The incident has sparked debates about the balance between IP protection and decentralization within blockchain networks. Critics argue that Soneium’s approach introduces centralization risks, while proponents believe it’s necessary to safeguard creators’ rights.
